The BMW 2000 CA is, as this week’s Petrolicious video shows, was nothing too remarkable. For 1969, it had a minute 4-cylinder engine when people only wanted thumping V8s. It was a compact coupe for sale during a time when most American’s wanted 20-foot sedans. It seems it was doomed to fail from the start.

But this 2000 CA has perhaps one redeeming quality: its pillarless coupe design. That design gives the cabin an expansive atmosphere. With the windows rolled down (electrically!) it’s possible to experience the joys of nature, and when you’re done with the drive, you can get out and look at it.

Pillarless coupes bring something special to the table. For some reason, the design can take a basic car and make it look downright elegant. The BMW 2000 CA was the predecessor to many great BMW coupes, and I think its pillarless design can be credited with BMW’s success down the line. It passed on good genes.
