1988 Nissan Safari Patrol
Are you the type of person that doesn’t get coffee at Starbucks, not because Starbucks is too mainstream, but because you tell people the coffee tastes better at the little shop around the corner? Do you have a single speed bike, but from 10 years ago before it was cool? Do you live in Portland because it is more San Francisco than San Francisco is? If so, this one is for you.
The 4x4 world is dominated by Jeeps, Land Rovers and Land Cruisers. You think about Nissan in this context about as much as Donald Trump thinks about tact. Judging by the awesome factor that is displayed by this Nissan Patrol, it is hard to understand how this truck could exist off the 4x4 radar.
The Y60 Nissan Patrol isn’t quite as sexy as a Range Rover Classic but definitely looks more rugged than a J60 Land Cruiser. I love the paint scheme of this 1988 GQ Highroad Granroad Patrol (or JDM Nissan Safari) example. The stripes, matching gold wheels and factory winch of the Granroad package is a bit more Dakar than its rivals and is the version I would want.
Do I love that it is RHD? Not really. Is the interior brown? Yes. But for $15k or best offer, you may be getting one of the nicer, low mileage examples of this off-roader available in the country. Also, artificial superiority that can only come from being unique is included at no extra charge.
Pros
- Low miles
- Highroof Granroad package
- It is the same as other popular choices, but different, so it's better
Not-so Pros
- Diesels without turbos are like old dogs, lovable but lazy and slow
- Bent rear bumper
- RHD is different in the States and also worse
