1988 Toyota Supercharged MR2
I've found that there are about 3,200 88 MR2's left on the road in the US today. Any of them that weren't bought and driven in dry/temperate climates have since rusted away. Beyond that, very few of the MR2's imported were supercharged. This example is a little rough around the edges and has high-ish miles (156,510), but with parts being cheaper than a McPick 2, the MR2 becomes very tempting.
The 1.6 liter power-plant has been known to be extremely reliable. There seems to be a very strong support on forums and based on one thread I found (here) the sweet spot for these cars is 150k-225k miles. So really this car has just been broken in. :) If you can afford to have a hobby car that is just used for fun it is hard to not seriously consider this little Japanese spaceship.
Also that interior is one of the more amazing things I've ever seen in any 80's or 90's coupe.
Pros
- Reliabile
- Economical
- Unique
Not-so Pros
- Some cosmetic issues
- Sick rims (actually sick, not 90's slang sick)
- Looks like a toy Jetsons car
